Description

NOTE: THIS POSTING REPRESENTS ONE (1) MULTI-LEVEL POSTING. IF THE POSITION IS NOT FILLED BY A QUALIFIED APPLICANT AT THE TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST LEVEL, THE POSITION MAY BE FILLED AT THE TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST SENIOR LEVEL.

This position is a lighting/signal design technician responsible for preparing signal and lighting plans utilizing Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) systems, and reviewing signal plans prepared by others, both internal and external to MnDOT, and to compute material quantities and project estimates. This position also creates, updates, and archives electronic as-built plans used by Maintenance for locates and repairs and performs calculations, completes checklists, and maintains electronic files and other documents necessary for design. This position will also participate in the development and implementation of process improvements, design standards and policy, training materials and product improvements.

Examples of work for this specific vacancy at the Transportation Specialist level include, but are not limited to:

  • Review mapping and plans for project topography
  • Prepare Survey and utility requests
  • Meet with Signal Operations, Utilities, Final Design, Bridge, and other functional areas for project development
  • Produce plan sheets with CADD
  • Review construction plans to determine design requirements
  • Calculate voltage drops and create wiring diagrams
  • Update Design Project Manager throughout the project
  • Compute material quantities and project estimates
  • Participate in coordination of plan development between MnDOT and Cities, Counties, or other State agencies
  • Create cost estimates for projects or as requested
  • Provide management of electronic files so that data storage is consistent, accurate and useful within the Traffic Engineering Section
  • Participate in the development of standards and process improvements.

This position is located at district headquarters in Roseville and has the flexibility to work in the office or a hybrid schedule that includes in office and teleworking time. If working a hybrid schedule, the incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Specialist level can be achieved with:

  • Four years of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities that included at least two years of experience utilizing computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD);

OR

  • Three years of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities that included at least two years of experience utilizing computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) AND one year of experience in any of the following areas: road maintenance, road construction, design, surveying, materials/soils, right of way, sign repair/ installation and/or permits.
  • A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. Degree equivalencies include the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with:

  • Two years of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities utilizing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD);

OR

  • One year of experience performing Traffic Engineering activities utilizing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) AND a combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas: road or bridge maintenance, road construction, design, surveying, materials/soils, right of way, sign repair/installation and/or permits;
  • A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. Degree equivalencies include the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
