Job Purpose
To manage the daily operations of the transport department, ensuring cost-effective and efficient routing of vehicles. Responsible for compliance, fleet management, driver coordination, and the use of routing software to optimize logistics and meet service level agreements.
Key Responsibilities
Transport Management
- Oversee and manage the company’s transport operations, ensuring timely and compliant delivery of goods.
- Maintain all fleet documentation, ensuring vehicles are taxed, MOT’d, and serviced according to schedule.
- Liaise with internal departments and external stakeholders to plan and coordinate deliveries and collections.
- Ensure all drivers comply with driving regulations, tachograph laws, and working time directives.
Vehicle Routing & Scheduling
- Use routing software and GPS systems to plan efficient delivery routes.
- Monitor and adjust vehicle schedules based on real-time data, delays, or customer requirements.
- Reduce mileage and fuel consumption while maintaining delivery deadlines.
Team Supervision
- Manage, motivate, and support a team of drivers.
- Conduct driver briefings, debriefings, and performance reviews.
- Organize training for new drivers and ongoing CPC compliance.
Compliance & Health and Safety
- Ensure compliance with transport legislation, including DVSA and Operator’s Licence obligations.
- Investigate and report incidents, accidents, and near misses.
- Promote and enforce a strong health and safety culture.
Reporting & Cost Control
- Monitor transport costs, identify areas for savings, and prepare budget reports.
- Track KPIs such as on-time delivery, vehicle utilization, and fuel efficiency.
- Report on operational performance to senior management.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) in Road Transport Management (essential).
- Proven experience in a transport or logistics management role.
- Strong knowledge of routing and scheduling software (e.g., Paragon, Route4Me, Microlise, etc.).
- Excellent geographical knowledge and attention to detail.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and logistics platforms.
- Full UK Driving Licence (Class 2 or above desirable but not essential).
Desirable Attributes
- Experience with fleet telematics and real-time tracking systems.
- Knowledge of cross-docking and multi-drop delivery operations.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
