The State of Connecticut , Department of Transportation ( CTDOT ) , is accepting applications for a Transportation Technician Trainee position in the Bridge Safety and Evaluation section of the Division of Bridges, in the Office of Engineering. This position may be located in New Haven, Norwich, Newington, Thomaston, or Wethersfield . The work location for this position may be determined based on the preference of the selected candidate in conjunction with the operational needs of the DOT.

Selection Plan

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of basic construction methods and materials;
Skill in use of construction related equipment and instruments and computer applications;
Ability to
perform mathematical computations;
create, read and interpret scales, diagrams, plans, specifications and drawings;
prepare accurate drawings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience involving the inspection of transportation construction projects, or testing of transportation materials, or bridge safety inspection.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in construction management, engineering technology, construction technology, civil engineering technology or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate’s degree.
Possession of at least Level II certification, from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), in one of the following Civil Engineering Technology Programs may be substituted for the General Experience:
Transportation Construction Inspection Program - Highway Construction Inspection
Construction Materials Testing Program - Asphalt, Concrete or Soils
Transportation Program - Highway Materials, Highway Construction Inspection or Bridge Safety Inspection.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of an AS degree or coursework in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
Experience with performing mathematical computations
Experience in the use of computers, including Office 365 and collaboration software such as Bluebeam or Adobe
Experience preparing neat and accurate engineering-related documents such as drawings and inspection reports
Experience leveraging interpersonal skills to work cohesively as part of a team
Experience communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, with teammates and stakeholders of all levels
Experience working outdoors in all types of weather conditions, at heights, in and over water, and traversing slopes and uneven terrain

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
A physical examination may be required.

Responsibilities

THE ROLE

We are seeking candidates who are interested in receiving on the job and classroom training to learn how to perform bridge inspections in accordance with established standards as part of a bridge safety inspection team.
Bridge safety inspection teams are responsible for the technical inspection of bridges and other structures in accordance with specifications for the National Bridge Inventory and other manuals, policies, and procedures. In addition to field inspection work, this position is responsible for preparing neat and accurate engineering-related documents such as drawings and inspection reports using Bluebeam and Excel.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in performing basic technical work in support of transportation projects.
