Overview Assists in overseeing trauma care quality and efficient coordination of patient care from pre-hospital to rehabilitation at ILH and MWH. Functions as a clinical expert to support and develop unit staff in trauma care through collaborative activities. Participates in development and delivery of injury prevention programs focused based on the hospitals’ registry data. Actively participates in data collection and data entry into the Trauma Registry. Consistently utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area. Responsibilities Contributes to the maintenance of high quality, cost effective services consistent with the needs of the users and the hospital’s budgetary guidelines. Assists in coordinating the continuum of trauma care, which includes the planning and implementation of protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients and serving as a resource for clinical practice. Acts as an interdepartmental liaison promoting effective multidisciplinary team work. Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Responsible to maintain current professional expertise. Promotes personal and professional growth among co-workers. Exhibits discretion and sound judgement in all aspects of the job. Maintains awareness of applicable laws/and or regulation changes, recognizes implications to the organization and recommends courses of action to ensure compliance. Assists in the development of policy/procedures and guidelines for safe, efficient operation of the department. Performs data collection of demographics, and coding of clinical and follow-up data from all sources into trauma registry database. Will keep registry current within 60 days of patient discharge. Abstracts, assembles, enters and codes clinical data with 95% accuracy into computer database by using the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), National Trauma Data Set (NTDS) and the Iowa Trauma Patient Data Dictionary Qualifications Education: Graduate of a Nursing Program, RN required. Bachelor’s degree required or actively pursuing Experience: Minimum of three years of emergency/critical care nursing experience required. License(s)/Certifications: Current RN license in Iowa. Instructor certification for Trauma Nursing Core Course – (or must be willing to obtain).
