Description

CONTRACT TYPE - PART TIME, PERMANENT, TERM TIME ONLY

We are looking to recruit 6 permanent part time travel assistants to escort pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities, some that may have challenging behaviour, to and from School.
To join our team, you will need work split shifts being available from 7.30am and 9.30am and between 2.30pm and 4.30pm during term time.
As a Travel Assistant you are responsible for the safety, welfare and control of the pupils in your care on the journey between home and school, just as you would expect a caring parent to be. A good Travel Assistant makes an important and valued contribution to the special services available to the families of children with special education needs and Disabilities.
Your daily contact with these pupils forms an essential link between home and school. It is important to work as flexibly as possible with both the school and the family to meet the (often demanding) needs of the children.

Role responsibilities:

  • Securing the welfare, discipline and appropriate behaviour of children during the journey to and from school.
  • Duties may involve the physical lifting of immobile and disabled children, the on/off loading of wheelchairs and car seats in tail-lift or other specialised vehicles, and the securing of wheelchairs inside vehicles as required. (Wheelchair and passenger restraints can weigh up to 8kg. Car seats can weight up to 11kg).
  • Carrying sums of money as required on behalf of parents to hand into a member of school staff.
  • Carrying medication for pupils on the journey to and from school and handing it to a member of school staff. This may need to be administered at school by designated staff.
  • Liaising with vehicle drivers’ operators concerning arrangements for commencing, conducting and completing the daily journey to/from school.

Role requirements:

  • Reading and writing skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Empathy and the ability to recognise and respond sensitively to individuals in need or distress
  • Attending and completing Paediatric First Aid training, facilitated by the organisation, if successful in obtaining the position

Experience of working with children, experience of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is desirable.
For full details of the responsibilities and requirements of this role please see the attached Job Description and Person Specification.

OUR WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

All council roles are allocated to either a fixed, field or flexible work style. Some roles are agile which enable and empower employees to maximise their performance and productivity, whilst maintaining a healthy work life balance. Roles with a fixed workstyle work in a fixed permanent council location. Roles with a field workstyle are usually allocated where employees are required to be out working in the community with a minimum requirement for ‘touch down’ space at any council location. Roles with a flexible workstyle have a flexible base location to meet the needs of the business and employees can work from a mixture of home or any council office, partner/client, or external location, as required to meet service requirements.
Please refer to the Job Description for further information on the workstyle assigned to the role you are applying for.
