Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Baw Baw Shire Council is seeking a motivated Tree Maintenance Officer to help deliver high-quality tree services across our townships, parks, streetscapes, and roadsides. In this practical, hands-on role, you’ll join a skilled and supportive outdoor team dedicated to maintaining the health, safety, and presentation of the Shire’s green assets.
You’ll carry out tree pruning and removal works, respond to customer service requests, and contribute to clean, green, and attractive public spaces. Working closely with fellow arborists and internal teams, you’ll play a key role in ensuring timely and professional maintenance outcomes that meet arboricultural standards and support community livability.

The following are the key responsibility areas for the position:
1. Perform arboricultural trade tasks in accordance with Baw Baw Shire policies, strategies and standards, in a safe, competent and efficient manner.
2. Operate plant and equipment including attachments to maintain and develop trees in accordance with Baw Baw Shire policies, strategies and standards in a safe, competent and efficient manner.
3. Maintain plant and equipment daily including keeping all in a clean and tidy condition.
4. Ensure that all tasks undertaken by the position is carried out in a healthy and safe manner and that unsafe aspects of the workplace are immediately rectified and/or reported to your supervisor when appropriate.
5. Perform other duties as directed in the urban operations team
6. Perform ground-based tree defect evaluations

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring a solid foundation of practical skills and industry knowledge, along with a positive, team-oriented attitude. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Certificate III in Arboriculture (AHC30820) or equivalent
  • Chainsaw Operation certificates (Level 1)
  • Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Licence – over 11m
  • Medium Rigid (MR) Driver’s Licence
  • First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011) or equivalent
  • Operate a Mobile Chipper/Mulcher Licence
  • Electrical Safety for Non-Electrical Workers (ESI) – Safe Approach Distances certificate
  • Completion of ‘Perform a Ground-Based Tree Defect Evaluation’ (AHCARB408) or equivalent (desired, not essential)
  • Strong knowledge of tree maintenance practices and the ability to work with a variety of tools and machinery
  • Experience in pruning and tree removal, ideally in a municipal or public space settin
