Job Details Job Location: Coos Bay, OR 97420 Position Type: Full Time Education Level: Not Specified Salary Range: $27.21 - $38.09 Hourly SUMMARY OF MAJOR FUNCTIONS Under the direct supervision of the Language Program Manager, the Tribal Language Learner–Teacher is responsible for preserving and promoting the Coquille Indian Tribe’s cultural heritage through language revitalization efforts. This position focuses on learning and teaching Coquille Tribal languages, with an emphasis on Miluk, and works to increase fluency and use of these awakening languages within the Tribal community. Language revitalization requires dedication, commitment, and passion. This role supports language learning and instruction across a wide range of age groups and settings, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Coquille Tribal languages. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Learns to speak and write Miluk with demonstrated proficiency within one year Provides consistent Tribal language learning experiences, both online and in person, for Tribal families and programs, including Head Start and other youth education initiatives Develops proficiency in language revitalization methodologies Uses culturally appropriate teaching strategies in all learning environments Creates language curriculum aligned with Language Program goals and strategies Creates, assists with, and provides language content for culture camps, cultural activities, events, and programs, including Elders events and Restoration Celebration Performs other duties as assigned The above statements describe the general duties of the position and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires the ability to communicate orally and to perform repetitive movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Excellent oral and written communication skills with strengths in collaboration and cooperative problem solving Ability to maintain a pleasant, respectful, and supportive demeanor in sometimes stressful or emotional situations Computer literacy sufficient to create correspondence, documents, reports, curriculum, and language materials Ability to foster an inclusive environment where diversity and individual differences are valued Strong organizational, time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills Awareness and sensitivity to Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs, with the ability to work effectively with diverse cultures Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and take ownership of projects and assignments Qualifications Demonstrated commitment to becoming a master speaker of the Miluk and Nuu-wee-ya’ languages Prior second language learning experience required Demonstrated knowledge of Tribal philosophies and overall goals Ability to work effectively with learners of all ages, from preschool through Elders Ability to adapt language curriculum for varying age groups and learning abilities preferred Strong written and oral communication skills in both instructional and public settings preferred Ability to work effectively in a team setting, either as a team member or leader Current and valid Oregon driver’s license required, with no insurability restrictions as determined by the Tribe’s insurance carrier
