REQUIREMENTS:

  • Licensing:
  • A valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required, with the specific class (A, B, or C) depending on the type of truck driven.
  • Additional endorsements may be needed for specific types of cargo, such as hazardous materials (HAZMAT) or tanker vehicles.
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience driving trucks, particularly for long distances or in a specific industry (e.g., freight, logistics), is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the operation of different types of trucks (e.g., flatbed, tanker, box truck) and associated equipment.
  • Physical Fitness:
  • Ability to handle the physical demands of the job, including loading and unloading cargo, long hours of driving, and performing vehicle inspections.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to react quickly to changing road conditions.
  • Knowledge of Regulations:
  • Understanding of federal and state transportation laws, including hours of service, weight limits, and safety regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Transportation of Goods:
  • Safely operate and drive trucks to transport goods, materials, or equipment to various destinations.
  • Plan routes using GPS or maps to ensure timely delivery while considering factors such as traffic, weather, and road conditions.
  • Load and unload cargo, ensuring it is properly secured and balanced to prevent shifting during transit.
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
  • Conduct regular inspections of the truck before and after trips, checking for mechanical issues, tire pressure, oil levels, and other essential components.
  • Report any maintenance or repair needs to the appropriate department or take the vehicle to a mechanic for service.
  • Keep the truck clean and in good working condition.
  • Compliance with Regulations:
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and local driving laws and regulations, including those related to hours of service (HOS), weight limits, and hazardous materials (if applicable).
  • Maintain accurate records of driving hours, mileage, fuel consumption, and cargo deliveries, often using electronic logging devices (ELDs).
  • Comply with company policies, including those related to safety, conduct, and customer service.
  • Safety:
  • Follow all safety protocols, including the use of seat belts and adherence to speed limits.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections, identifying potential hazards or issues that could affect the vehicle’s safe operation.
  • Manage any emergencies, such as accidents, breakdowns, or cargo spills, by following established procedures and reporting to the appropriate authorities.
  • Customer Interaction:
  • Communicate with dispatchers, customers, and warehouse staff to coordinate pick-ups, deliveries, and any changes to the schedule.
  • Provide excellent customer service by delivering goods on time and in good condition.
  • Obtain necessary signatures and documentation upon delivery to verify that cargo has been received.
  • Record Keeping:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of trips, including delivery logs, fuel receipts, and expense reports.
  • Submit paperwork and reports to the employer or dispatch as required.
  • Cargo Handling:
  • Secure cargo using ropes, chains, or other appropriate methods to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
  • Handle hazardous materials, if certified, according to legal and safety guidelines.
  • Adaptability:
  • Adjust routes or schedules based on changing conditions, such as traffic delays, road closures, or customer needs.
  • Handle long periods of driving, often requiring overnight stays and managing fatigue.
