Protecnium is an international consulting firm specializing in engineering and technical services. We are seeking a Tunnel Party Chief Surveyor to join our team for a major tunneling project in Chesapeake, Virginia. This is a key role responsible for ensuring surveying precision and leading a team to support construction activities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree or diploma in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in underground/tunnel surveying.
  • Strong proficiency with survey software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Leica Cyclone).
  • Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and extended hours as needed.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. (no sponsorship available).

Responsibilities

ROLE SUMMARY

The Tunnel Party Chief Surveyor will lead and oversee all surveying operations within the tunneling project, ensuring accurate alignment, elevations, and control networks. The role involves supervising survey staff, coordinating with engineering and construction teams, and ensuring all work is carried out according to design specifications and project requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead, supervise, and coordinate the surveying team assigned to the tunnel project.
  • Establish and maintain accurate horizontal and vertical control networks.
  • Perform tunnel alignments, as-built surveys, and monitor deformations/displacements.
  • Collaborate with engineers and construction managers to interpret plans and provide precise layouts and staking.
  • Ensure surveying equipment (total stations, digital levels, laser scanners, gyroscopic systems) is properly calibrated, maintained, and utilized.
  • Maintain accurate survey records, field notes, and reports.
  • Implement safety and quality control procedures within the surveying team.
  • Communicate effectively to resolve design discrepancies or unexpected site conditions.
  • Mentor and train junior surveyors and assistants.
