Description

TWO TENURE TRACK POSITIONS IN ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING (ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR) / KAKSI TENURE TRACK -TEHTÄVÄÄ, ELEKTRONIIKKA (APULAISPROFESSORI TAI PROFESSORI)

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en
We are seeking two (2) Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors in the field of 1) Electronics and Embedded Systems and 2) Microelectronics Circuit Design.
The positions are placed within the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University in the Unit of Electrical Engineering (EE). The EE unit covers a full range of research and educational areas, including Electronics and Embedded System, Electrical Energy Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Radio Systems. Our team includes 13 full professors, 8 tenure track professors, and roughly 200 staff members. We collaborate closely with several industrial partners and maintain an active presence in the international scientific community.

SITE DESCRIPTION

Join the cutting-edge world of Electronics Engineering at Tampere University, located in the vibrant city of Tampere within the Pirkanmaa region of Finland. Our esteemed institution aims to enhance excellence in Electronics and Embedded Systems and Microelectronics Circuit Design.
Our research encompasses a wide range of activities, including electronics and embedded systems, microelectronics, System-on-Chip, thin-film devices and circuits, low-level software, and system design for industrial, healthcare, and consumer environments. We collaborate closely with industry and academic units, with a significant portion of our research funding coming from the EU, Business Finland, the Research Council of Finland, and industry partners.
Tampere University is involved in the Wide bandgap (WBG) ChipAct JU pilotline. Our role focuses on the development and testing of WBG devices and their integration into hybrid System-in-Package (SiP) solutions. The pilot line at Tampere will advance next-generation semiconductor technology with applications in motor control systems, battery management systems, fast charging systems, photovoltaic inverters, power supply systems, and 5G base stations. Additionally, the university is developing techniques for SiP fabrication (SiPFAB), enabling the integration and packaging of semiconductor chips into complete systems.
Furthermore, Tampere University, Tampere City, and Pirkanmaa region released Chips from Finland initiative, strengthening EU’s Chips Act design excellence in the region with a strong business cluster around wireless communications, intelligent machines, and imaging. Nokia designs the most advanced chips in Europe for 5G on the latest IC technology nodes in Finland, and Industry 4.0 companies have significant potential for custom chips that differentiate and secure competitiveness. To meet industrial challenges, System-on-Chip Hub (SoC Hub) focuses on large, top quality prototype chips in the smallest geometries and aiming at high technology readiness level (TRL6 onwards). The SoC Hub has created a unique co-working model where over 70 experts from the university and companies collaborate daily on SoC design. The promise of one large SoC per year has been proven with over 130M transistor chips from 2021. We use a mix of open source and custom Intellectual Property (IP) blocks and a mixture of open source and commercial EDA tools.
Join us at Tampere University and be part of an exceptional team that drives innovation, fosters collaboration, and shapes the future of chip design.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished academics to expand the current research of the Electrical Engineering Unit. The research activities of the selected candidates will be integrated into our active and ambitious research work, which we currently organize through the Electronics Research Center and System-on-Chip Hub. We look forward to collaboration among the new positions in a complementary way. We are searching for candidates in the following areas:

  • Electronics and Embedded systems. We see Electronics and Embedded Systems as essential to controlling the world inside vehicles, buildings, machinery, industrial processes, and every smart system interacting with the environment. In this position, you will lead the electronics and embedded systems research group and teach by making clear links with existing activities in computer-aided design of circuits and systems, microcontrollers, bare-metal programming, and hardware-software co-design. The successful candidate should be active in hardware and software research with an application-oriented vision and solid practical first-hand skills in implementing new systems from an idea to a prototype.
  • Microelectronics Circuit Design. Microelectronics Circuit Design is a critical enabler in developing vehicles, machines, industry, healthcare, and IoT devices. Integrated circuits offer improved performance for edge computing and fast communications applications. In this position, you will lead a research group in microelectronics circuit design in analog, mixed-signal, or RF integrated circuits, with a link to our existing activities in chip design. The successful candidate should have strong knowledge and practical expertise in current trends, tools, and methodologies in microelectronics circuit design and physical implementation of chips.

The final profiles of the positions can be tailored according to your specific expertise.

In general, our tenure track staff are expected to:

  • Pursue and supervise high-quality scientific research in the field.
  • Lead, conduct, and develop research-based teaching, curriculum development, and student supervision.
  • Actively collaborate with local, national, and global research partners.
  • Seek, secure, and manage research funding from national and international sources for your research group.
  • Demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders.

The specific objectives will be set based on the level and previous experience of the candidate.
