In this role, you will lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team working on Ubuntu, one of the world’s most widely used open source platforms. You will be responsible for guiding technical roadmaps, overseeing software delivery, and ensuring quality, performance, and resilience across distributed systems. The role combines hands-on engineering with people leadership, providing opportunities to mentor engineers, influence architecture, and contribute to open source projects. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to define strategy, deliver innovative solutions, and drive the evolution of both server and desktop platforms. This fully remote role allows you to work in a globally distributed environment while occasionally participating in in-person team sprints around the world. It’s ideal for leaders passionate about open source, software craftsmanship, and developing engineering talent. \n Accountabilities: Lead engineering teams in designing, building, and shipping high-quality software for Ubuntu across server, desktop, and core foundations. Own the technical roadmap and ensure team alignment with product strategy, engineering principles, and performance goals. Mentor, coach, and develop engineers to help them grow in technical and leadership skills. Collaborate with product management and cross-functional teams to define vision, strategy, and execution plans. Review architecture, designs, and code to ensure best practices and high-quality delivery. Contribute to open source projects, upstream initiatives, and community engagement. Facilitate team processes, planning, estimation, and execution while maintaining a strong engineering culture. Requirements: Proven experience leading technical teams, with a strong background in software engineering. Deep expertise in Linux, Ubuntu, and distributed systems. Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, C/C++, or Flutter in production environments. Hands-on engineering ability, with strong architecture, code review, and performance optimization skills. Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for managing distributed teams. Academic background in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent professional experience. Passion for open source software and community contribution. Ability to travel up to twice per year for in-person team events. Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments and inspire others. Nice-to-have: experience with software packaging, distribution mechanisms, performance/security engineering, or prior open source leadership. Benefits: Fully remote, globally distributed work environment with in-person team sprints twice per year. Annual personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000. Performance-driven annual bonus and yearly compensation review. Recognition rewards and employee assistance programs. Paid holiday, maternity/paternity leave, and travel support for company events. Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events. Opportunities to engage with the global open source community and contribute to cutting-edge technologies. \n Why Apply Through Jobgether?
