CASUALTY UNDERWRITER

Melbourne VIC
This is a regulated role under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime.

Delivering a profitable ‘Underwriting’ service to your clients. Key tasks include: underwriting business within the agreed business plan and individual underwriting authority, within the context of Company Rules and Guidelines; supporting the business planning and forecasting process by ensuring all data inputs are entered accurately first time and kept updated; monitoring cumulative financial exposure within outlined limits (limit management); maintaining awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input on settlement of claims; developing relationships with your allocated brokers and existing and/or new clients; understanding the Company rules and standards pertaining to facultative and treaty reinsurance including high-level knowledge of Casualty treaty exclusions; supporting the design and structure of both standard and bespoke risk solutions in accordance with Company rules and guidelines within individual underwriting authority.

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred and equivalent experience in the relevant class of business, possessing functional knowledge and skills reflective of a fully competent and self-motivated practitioner working collaboratively within a close-knit team environment.
  • Perform tasks according to established procedures, with some ability to exercise discretion and initiative within the Company underwriting rules and guidelines in full and timely consultation with Casualty Underwriting Manager instructions and directives at all times.
  • Marketing - Effectively plan for sales and business development by integrating the use of Company techniques, tools, and information to support profitable business growth over a defined period.
  • Negotiation/Sales - Plan, structure and conduct negotiations with brokers and/or clients in a professional and collaborative manner to reach outcomes that gain the support and acceptance of all parties and protect the Company reputation and brand within both informal and formal external and internal interactions.
  • Analytical Skills - Visualize, gather information, articulate, analyze and solve complex problems in order to create workable business decision proposals.
  • Interpersonal Savvy - Build excellent interpersonal relationships with brokers, clients and colleagues with the intention of improving personal profile and reputation within AXA XL and the broader market.
  • Strategy and Planning - Make underwriting decisions to fulfill business strategic plan and deliver results. Has knowledge of financial targets and levers in order to deliver on departmental business plan.
  • Industry Knowledge - Understanding of the insurance industry and specific Casualty products to positively impact the underwriting business.
Responsibilities
  • Reviewing renewal and new business submissions including interpretation of questionnaires, policy wordings, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports whilst conducting appropriate independent and collaborative research to determine the appropriate degree of risk for each account.
  • Calculating appropriate risk premiums using recognized Company rating tools, considering the risk costs inherent to the relevant sector, as well as the Underwriting and general administration costs loadings to achieve profitability on every account.
  • Proactively advising, assisting, servicing and following up with brokers on insurance and risk management matters to ensure on-schedule fulfillment of their clients’ insurance requirements.
  • Effective relationship management to initiate opportunities via identification, analysis and progression of Casualty products (either cross-sell or stand-alone Casualty) and ensuring account retention of allocated Casualty accounts within the Melbourne portfolio.
  • Underwriting timely implementation of new and renewal accounts in accordance with personal authority and all Company protocols and standards.
  • Maintaining awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input to both Casualty Underwriting Manager and Claims team on the settlement of claims.
  • Working collaboratively and adaptively in a team environment; assisting underwriters, underwriting assistants and management as needed and directed by Casualty Underwriting Manager.
  • Consultation with Distribution team where required by and following consultation with Casualty Underwriting Manager.
  • Required proficiency to be learned and executed at all times in all critical underwriting tools including raters, workflow tools, booking systems, policy wordings, internal training, Rules and Guidelines
