Responsibilities in addition to renewal and new business rate proposal generation include; pricing of alternate benefit sets using actuarial based pricing models, assessment of dental and vision utilization, evaluation of large claimant impacts, and consultation and interaction with cross functional areas such as Actuarial, Sales, Clinical and IT&D. This position functions as a consultant by providing advice to Sales and Account Executives, presenting information to groups and brokers, and providing department management with opinions of the financial consequences of existing or proposed insurance arrangements. Mathematical, financial and analytical skills are utilized to research data, develop projections and formulate appropriate proposals and recommendations to achieve business objectives. The position is also responsible for approving the financial contract pages for renewing groups. Responsibilities and Qualifications Prepares rate quotations for prospect groups, rate renewals, and benefit change quotes for current groups and ancillary coverage quotes based on Capital Blue Cross (CBC) underwriting and rating requirements and policies. Presents rate exceptions with appropriate analysis and recommendations for action to management for review and approval. Consults with Sales, Sales Management and Underwriting Management in support of prospect and renewal rate actions and quotes. Supports Sales in justifying prospect and renewal calculations through the creation of various exhibits and analyses. Designs, modifies and programs minor applications on the microcomputer that apply to rating structures and actuarial analyses used by the Plan, generally under the direction of the Senior Underwriter or Team Lead. Reviews and approves financial contract language for sold and renewing groups. Accompanies Sr. Underwriter, Team Lead and department management on account calls to present renewals, and rate quotations. Assists in developing and presenting unique settlement and financing arrangements not addressed in standard guidelines. Provides training, guidance and peer review of assignments to Underwriter I's. Skills: Ability to quickly abstract an insurance mechanism or financial arrangement into its theoretical mathematical structure and determine the financial consequences of the arrangement. Ability to communicate technical issues both verbally and in writing to department management staff. Written and verbal communication skills along with subject matter expertise are used to support a consultative approach directed at understanding and meeting customer needs. Knowledge: Knowledge of microcomputer software and applications used in the rating process. Knowledge of CBC rating policies and procedures. Familiar with the theoretical structure of insurance mechanisms and how to model these structures mathematically, also knowledge of the formulae currently used by CBC in rating, underwriting, and reserving processes. Familiar with CBC organizational structures and operations. Experience: 3 years’ experience as a group underwriter. Education and Certifications: Bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, economics, statistics, accounting or a related field.
