Job Description:
The Underwriting Manager position is responsible for the profitable production and underwriting of Casualty accounts from retail brokers across Canada. This person will operate as the Casualty leader and guide others in the production/retention of profitable business.
The position reports directly to the CUO (Large Commercial), Canada. This position is key in driving the successful execution of the unit’s strategic plan, with particular emphasis on growth and excellent service standards.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian insurance industry, with in-depth technical expertise in Casualty insurance products.
  • Proven leadership skills to guide a team in delivering the highest level of customer experience.
  • Robust business acumen to align team efforts with the needs of customers, utilizing vision, strategy, and operational plans. Experience in developing business plans through data and analytics is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex relationships with diplomacy and confidence across all organizational levels.
  • A proactive approach to anticipating customer and market trends to position AXA XL as a responsible and innovative market leader.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Professional designations (CIP, CRM, CPCU) preferred.
  • Extensive underwriting experience in the casualty sector, with a preference for experience with large accounts.
  • Established relationships with insured clients and brokers.
  • Outstanding negotiation, organizational, and communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a collaborative approach.

Responsibilities

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and lead new business initiatives, renewals, re-pricings, restrictions, special acceptances, commutations, and cancellations, determining risk acceptability and coverage in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authorities.
  • Lead and develop the Casualty underwriting team in Canada, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Assist in generating revenue and expense budgets, ensuring adherence to financial targets.
  • Utilize extensive underwriting expertise in Casualty to manage complex accounts and mentor team members.
  • Foster collaboration and communication with key internal stakeholders, including Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Underwriting Support, Financial Credit Control, Billing, Marketing, and Compliance/Regulatory departments.
  • Travel throughout the territory (20%) for client, broker and internal meetings.
