DIVISION: DURDOC HOSPITAL- SICU JOB TITLE: UNIT MANAGER – x1 PURPOSE OF POSITION The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of operating a unit within Surgical Intensive Care Unit including supervising nursing staff, coordinating quality patient care, capacity building, mentoring and training and ensuring the nursing service delivery is practiced within a multi-disciplinary team KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS Ensure all nursing staff in the team practice safely, are competent and work within their scope of practice. Ability to plan strategically and financially and manage all costs emanating from the department. Assume the role of Nurse Educator with Students and staff. Ability to coordinate individualized patient care, from point of first contact throughout the episode of care, incorporating discharge planning in the plan of care. To maintain the highest standards at all times. Ability to plan, organise, control, lead and direct the team and actively participate as a team member to achieve the company goals. Ability to understand and adhere to policies, procedures, and protocols. Good Interaction skills with doctors, patients, and colleagues essential Ability to handle all conflict situations in the Unit. Ability to uphold all legislative requirements including DOH, SANC, DOL, OHSC Equipment maintenance and motivations. Recruitment of nursing personnel with the NSM. Ability to lead and supervise staff and apply problem-solving skills. Adhere to and demonstrate the Hospital Regulations and Policies. Manage clinical governance and clinical risk. Foster a harmonious working environment and promote staff wellbeing. Build and maintain stakeholder relationships. Maintain professionalism and foster a professional environment. Build interdepartmental collaborative working relationships. COMPETENCIES (The following will be advantageous) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Educational Qualifications & Experience) A relevant nursing qualification (Diploma in General Nursing/B Cur degree). Approximately five (5) years experience as a Registered Nurse, deputising for the Unit Manager. Diploma in Nursing Management is essential. Critical Care Nursing accredited with SANC. The ideal person will have willingness to assume job ownership, work independently and apply principles of continuous improvement.
