Overview Unit Secretary Emergency Department UnityPoint - St. Luke’s - Sioux City Downtown Hours: Days 7a-3p The Unit Secretary provides essential administrative and clerical support to ensure smooth operations within a healthcare unit. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The Unit Secretary serves as a central point of contact for staff, patients, families, and other departments, assisting with administrative functions, patient flow, and assisting with unit activities. Responsibilities Administrative Displays excellent receptionist skills in greeting all customers including both internal and external. Answers phone and call light with proper phone etiquette, and sensitivity to the needs of the caller. Contacts staff immediately for patient care needs or assists with patient needs. Assists physicians as needed. Performs administrative activities for assigned Nursing Director/Manager such as typing and proofing a variety of materials; e.g. correspondence, reports, charts, memos, policies and procedures. Accountability Orders needed office supplies, or other supplies as needed for the areas. Organizes nurses’ station to keep records neat and well organized. Review daily charge capture for accuracy. Basic UPH Performance Criteria Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance. Qualifications Education: High school graduate of GED equivalent required. Associate degree or higher is preferred. Experience: Experience with computers and ability to learn computer skills required. One to two years of administrative experience, preferably in a healthcare setting with demonstrated communication skills desired. License(s)/Certification(s): Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons required.
