Duties and Responsibilities
Within the area of operations of the Department of Tolima, the UNVMC Intern will assist, in a support capacity, with the issue of the implementation of the peace agreement in rural/urban contexts: • Support the Design of Youth Engagement Activities: Contribute to the development of strategies and initiatives that engage young people in peacebuilding activities. Assist in the creation of educational materials for the Regional Office, campaigns, and workshops aimed at fostering dialogue and promoting understanding among youth from different backgrounds. • Monitoring and Reporting and conducting research: Collect data and feedback from participants in youth-focused peacebuilding programs and well as on child recruitment; Monitor and evaluate the impact of youth peacebuilding activities on local communities; Prepare regular reports and presentations for stakeholders; Contribute to analysis within he Regional Office regarding the threats facing young people in the context of armed conflict in Tolima and help formulating recommendations on prevention of recruitment while assisting (secondary role) with ongoing research, as required, on the implementation of the peace agreement in urban contexts and the reincorporation of FARC-EP ex-combatants within these. • Coordination and Networking: Assist in liaising with local youth organizations, civil society groups, and other UN agencies working in the peacebuilding sector and assisting the Regional Office team with interviews (as required) on the implementation of the peace agreement in urban contexts; Facilitate coordination meetings with youth leaders and community representatives focusing on strengthening relationships with entities involved in the prevention of violence among youth. • Community Engagement: Participate in outreach activities that promote youth involvement in peace initiatives. Support the development of community dialogues and discussions on building social cohesion and trust among different community groups. In a support function, the intern will assist the regional team to support ongoing research to provide information on insight into how the reincorporation of FARC-EP ex-combatants, originally designed to be a collective process in mainly rural areas, functions as it becomes increasingly more prevalent and singular in urban contexts. It would include the areas of reincorporation, the promotion of victims’ rights, transitional justice processes and the execution of polices that strengthen protection and security. The intern may be asked to support the team with functions outside this specific project, although directly related to UNVMC’s mandate. The intern will be placed in the Ibague, the capital of the department of Tolima. The Local Office of Ibague covers parts of the north, east and centre of the department and the incumbent will work in close coordination with the Local Office in Chaparral, which covers the south of the department.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s degree and have completed a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Interested candidates must be pursuing their degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Development, International Relations, law or a related field to this Internship Job Opening. However, your training, education, advanced course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your Internship. Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s degree and have completed a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Interested candidates must be pursuing their degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Development, International Relations, law or a related field to this Internship Job Opening. Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Teams). Knowledge of statistical software and data visualization software (Power BI) is desirable. Ability to gather/analyze information, conduct research and interact with a wide range of actors, which may include civil society, and academia is required. Must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
