St. Luke’s School, a secular, college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a full-time History teacher in the Upper School. A successful candidate will join a team of passionate teachers who bring history to life for students. Our History Department faculty are enthusiastic people who love teaching and learning. At this moment, History teachers stand at a critical juncture in educating young people to understand and navigate the political, economic and social contexts in which we all live. We seek a colleague who understands their classroom role as mentor and coach to be every bit as crucial as content expert; who enthusiastically advocates for critical reading, reflection, and research as the tools of responsible students and citizens; and who embraces opportunities for challenging and age-appropriate conversations about complex issues and identities in and out of the classroom. The Upper School Humanities wing includes Harkness tables in each classroom. Our Upper School History curriculum includes an Advanced Curriculum, a variety of 12th grade electives, and the opportunity for seniors to participate in a capstone research project as Global or Literary Scholars. Primary Job Responsibilities: Teach full-time load of 4 classes, including Ancient History and Modern World History. Participate in an after-school activity such as athletics or theater for all three seasons. Serve as co-advisor for a group of 6 to 8 students. Assist with supervisory duties, such as study hall proctoring, lunchroom supervision, and chaperoning events.
