The Role Mount Vernon School seeks an innovative and collaborative Upper School Humanities teacher with expertise in History. At Mount Vernon, Humanities instructors teach a series of courses that integrate Literature, History, and English Language Arts skills. Versatility, collaboration, and openness to innovative instructional practices are essential. Availability to sponsor athletic, artistic, or academic teams/clubs is preferred. Responsibilities Provide meaningful instruction in Grades 9-12 Humanities using a variety of research-based and innovative teaching methods Create well-planned nine-week units that connect students to the real-world learning opportunities Create differentiated lessons to match the needs of each student in the classroom Timely maintenance of accurate and comprehensive records of each student's performance and progress & communication with students/families pertaining to progress Care and nurture for the social and emotional needs of each student Maintenance of an organized, inviting, and student-centered learning environment Participation in duties (e.g. lunch, enrichment and carpool) and others as assigned Possess strong character with an absolute drive for excellence, a team-oriented spirit, and a commitment to meeting the learning and social-emotional needs of students Core Competencies Culturally proficient & equity literate Ability to cultivate respectful and affirming environments A track record of giving high-quality, responsive feedback Understanding of competency-based assessment and a mastery approach to learning Proficiency in Google Suite & Mac/Apple OS Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Humanities education, History, Social Sciences, Psychology, English, or a related field Classroom teaching experience, preferably in a high school or independent school setting Proficiency with technological tools and platforms This job description is intended to describe the basic elements of the job and should not be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, skills, efforts or working conditions associated with the job.
