Starting August 2026 Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School seeks a thoughtful, creative, and collaborative educator to teach Upper School humanities in grades 5–8. This role is ideal for a teacher who enjoys designing interdisciplinary learning experiences, guiding students through complex ideas in literature and history, and helping middle graders develop the habits of mind that support strong reading, writing, discussion, and critical thinking. Humanities at Hausner emphasizes: Close reading and analytical thinking Strong writing instruction and communication skills Historical inquiry and interpretation Interdisciplinary, project-based learning Student voice, discussion, and intellectual curiosity Developmentally responsive teaching for middle grade learners Professional Qualities and Skills: Strong background in literature, history, or related humanities disciplines Student-centered teaching grounded in curiosity, challenge, and relationship Ability to differentiate instruction to support a range of learners Commitment to collaboration with colleagues and communication with families Strong classroom management grounded in clarity, consistency, and care Reflective practice and openness to feedback and professional growth Comfort using instructional technology and digital learning tools Interest in interdisciplinary teaching and project-based learning Willingness to contribute to the broader life of the school community Key Responsibilities Include: Teach humanities classes in the Upper School (grades 5–8) Design and implement interdisciplinary, project-based instructional units aligned with language arts and social studies standards Develop engaging learning experiences that connect literature, history, and writing Serve as an advisor for a small group of Upper School students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional development in collaboration with colleagues and the school counselor Teach an elective course twice per week based on areas of interest and student demand Collaborate with grade-level teams and colleagues to plan curriculum and strengthen instruction across subjects Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional learning, and school initiatives Attend and support school events such as Open House, Back to School Night, and student programs Chaperone overnight grade-level trips when applicable Requirements Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university Teaching credential (California multiple subject or single subject in English or history preferred) Academic background in English, history, or liberal arts Prior teaching experience with demonstrated classroom management skills Experience working with elementary and/or middle-grade students preferred Compensation: Competitive salary range: $85,000–$105,000 annually, dependent on experience Comprehensive benefits package including Medical, Dental, Vision, 403b Retirement Plan, Long- and Short-Term Disability, Voluntary Life and Accident Insurance, Employee Assistance Program, Commuter Checks, and Flexible Spending Account About Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School: Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School is an independent community school serving students in TK–8.
