REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

Technical & Professional

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AA/BS in Electronics or Electrical Engineering preferred
  • 4+ years of UPS maintenance or field service experience
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; must be 21+ to operate company vehicle
  • MSHA 80-hour certification required
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools (multimeter, infrared camera, battery test equipment)
  • Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals

SOFT SKILLS

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, service management software)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Lift up to 50 lbs continuously and regularly; up to +100 lbs occasionally with assistance from mechanical lift
  • Stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and reach overhead frequently
  • Must be able and willing to wear a respirator and be on-call
Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The UPS Battery Technician / Field Service Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing UPS systems and associated battery equipment. This role supports critical infrastructure by ensuring reliable backup power and minimizing downtime through expert service and technical support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Installation & Maintenance

  • Install, test, upgrade, and decommission UPS systems and battery strings (VRLA, wet cell, -48VDC, ELI)
  • Perform battery change-outs, preventive maintenance, and system inspections
  • Safely isolate batteries for maintenance and replacement
  • Maintain battery charging and monitoring equipment

_ Troubleshooting & Repair_

  • Diagnose and resolve issues with UPS systems and batteries
  • Perform discharge tests, single-cell charges, and voltage/resistance/specific gravity readings
  • Replace defective components and reassemble battery systems

_ Documentation & Communication_

  • Complete Field Service Reports (FSRs), timesheets, and expense reports
  • Maintain accurate service records and update job schedules in management software
  • Communicate equipment status and recommendations to customers
  • Provide training to customers and team members on safe operation and maintenance

Compliance & Safety

  • Adhere to OSHA, MSHA, DOT Hazmat, and company safety protocols
  • Wear required PPE and respirators; comply with lead exposure precautions
  • Follow established procedures for safety, maintenance, and quality control
