POSITION SUMMARY:

The Urban Canopy Program Coordinator is a full-time position responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of The 6th Branch’s (T6B) Urban Canopy Program. Reporting directly to the Urban Canopy Program Director, the Coordinator plays a vital role in expanding and maintaining tree canopy and green spaces across East Baltimore. Primary responsibilities include leading field activities such as tree planting, watering, mulching, pruning, and lot maintenance. The Coordinator also provides direct supervision of Program Technicians, Service Members, Interns, and volunteers, ensuring task completion and team coordination. Additionally, this role manages operations at the Broadway East Tree Corral and contributes to related programming, including composting efforts, community markets, and participation in the SHARE program. Public engagement is a key element of the position, helping to raise awareness and encourage community participation in canopy and greening initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in urban forestry, landscaping, and grounds maintenance is required.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and respect for the communities being served.
  • Interest in trees, green infrastructure, or environmental justice.
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a team with supervision.
  • Drivers license required
  • Ability to operate a truck while towing a trailer
Responsibilities
  • As the Urban Canopy Program Coordinator, you will lead a dedicated team in the stewardship and expansion of East Baltimore’s tree canopy. Your responsibilities span administrative, fieldwork, and community engagement functions, with a focus on operational excellence, team leadership, and environmental impact.

Program and Staff Management

  • Supervise and support Urban Canopy Program Technicians, providing daily oversight, task delegation, and morale building.
  • Lead field crews and volunteers during tree plantings, site maintenance, and green space restoration projects.
  • Set the pace for field work and cultivate a professional, mission-driven team culture.
  • Organize team schedules and weekly task lists, coordinating with the Urban Canopy Program Director.

Field Operations

  • Execute and oversee tree planting and maintenance tasks, including watering, mulching, pruning, staking, and site preparation.
  • Perform landscaping duties such as mowing, weeding, clearing debris, and maintaining stewarded lots and green spaces.
  • Manage day-to-day operations at the Broadway East Tree Corral, ensuring it remains clean, organized, and safe.
  • Operate and maintain mechanized landscaping equipment and irrigation systems.
  • Load and unload tools, trees, mulch, and supplies; prepare and maintain field equipment for daily use.
  • Conduct tree condition assessments and identify maintenance needs for lot and street trees.
  • Support Urban Canopy mapping using ArcGIS

Program Administration

  • Collaborate with the Urban Canopy Program Director to develop seasonal planting schedules and maintenance plans.
  • Maintain up-to-date digital records for planting, maintenance, inventory, and field notes.
  • Manage canopy data systems, generating reports as needed for internal planning and grant compliance.
  • Oversee the inventory, organization, and maintenance of tools, signage, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors to support the development of green spaces and tree care needs.
  • Run local errands related to the Urban Canopy Program’s logistics and supply needs.
  • Post photos and content to social media platforms during community-facing events, aligned with T6B’s branding guidelines.

Community Engagement

  • Act as a visible and positive ambassador for The 6th Branch, particularly in neighborhoods surrounding green sites and the Tree Corral.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community members, local leaders, and volunteers.
  • Promote canopy efforts at schools, events, and markets; lead tours of planting sites for partners and funders.
  • Support and coordinate logistics for community volunteer days and educational events.
  • Foster a respectful and inclusive environment for all volunteers and neighbors engaged in T6B’s work.

Additional Duties

  • Attend all staff meetings, program briefings, and membership gatherings.
  • Support other greening and farming programs as needed.
  • Report site issues such as damaged trees, safety concerns, or unusual conditions promptly.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned in alignment with T6B’s mission and goals.
