POSITION SUMMARY

The Utility department is responsible for maintaining water, waste water and storm water systems and facilities. In the Utilities Foreman’s absence, the Utilities Lead Hand will assume his/her duties. Due to the nature of the Utilities department the Lead Hand will at times be required to lead some or all of the Utility Operators on maintenance tasks while the Foreman is indisposed with other projects. This position is within a multi-function team that provides analytical and environmental testing.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary diploma in a related field; combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a similar setting
  • Certificates: Water Distribution Level II, Wastewater Collection Level II, Wastewater Treatment Level II (while maintaining yearly CEU requirements) or willingness to pursue this specialized education
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with computer competency in MS Office
  • Approachable and polite manner with the ability to mediate and problem solve
Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain water distribution equipment including computer control systems, alarm signals, regulate operating pressure, and distribute potable water
  • Perform routine maintenance on various water distribution equipment including but not limited to valves, hydrants, manholes, meters, pumps, and generators
  • Collect and analyze water samples from random spots in the distribution system as determined by the Utility Foreman
  • Collect and analyze sanitary samples from lagoons, lift stations, the Oldman River, and various locations as determined by the Utility Foreman
  • Responsible for maintaining all facets of a water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater collection system including yearly preventative maintenance, point repairs, infrastructure replacements, water quality testing, and upgrades to existing systems
  • Perform laboratory duties and keep accurate records
  • Provide all monthly and annual reports to Alberta and Environment Canada
  • Operate and maintain a Level I Water Treatment & Level II Wastewater Treatment, as well as Level II Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection systems
  • Maintain the Town’s stormwater retention and detention ponds and stormwater system
  • Maintain and operate all SCADA and other software programs required for water and wastewater systems
  • Provide leadership to employees by setting an example of professionalism and demonstrating a strong work ethic
  • Operate a Hydrovac Truck with flusher
  • Keep equipment clean and maintained to Town standards
  • Provide First Call locates for all utilities
  • Provide after-hours “On-Call” services to the Town in rotation with other staff
  • Perform other duties as required
