KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Proven experience as a VAT Accountant or in a specialist taxation role.
• Strong knowledge of VAT legislation, accounting principles, and financial management practices.
• Experience advising on VAT in relation to projects, policies, and service plans.
• Ability to interpret and communicate complex financial information clearly.
• Strong stakeholder management and client-facing skills.
• Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities.
• Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) desirable.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced VAT Accountant to join the Financial Management Service within the Resources Directorate. You will play a key role in delivering specialist VAT advice, ensuring compliance, and minimising financial risks while supporting the delivery of high-quality financial services. This is a vital role within a busy team supporting service managers and strategic leaders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide expert advice on VAT implications for projects and major developments.
• Manage all aspects of VAT and other non-payroll related taxation and planning to reduce liability and financial risk.
• Monitor the Council’s VAT partial exemption position, ensuring compliance and completion of year-end calculations.
• Oversee and maintain the “Option to Tax” process.
• Provide strategic support to the Executive Director (Resources) in financial planning and reporting.
• Advise on VAT and taxation queries promptly and effectively.
• Represent the team at working groups, external partnerships, and special projects.
• Deliver accurate financial statements and reports to clients within agreed deadlines.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support effective financial management of services.
