Hybrid working, you will be required to work at the Council Offices in Huyton each Tuesday.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Professional accountancy qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIPFA, CTA) or equivalent relevant experience

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • In-depth knowledge of VAT in local authorities
  • Strong understanding of public sector finance, including current local government finance issues
  • Experience of managing VAT and other taxation matters within a complex organisation
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and apply VAT legislation to diverse projects and services
Responsibilities

WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH THIS ROLE:

As a VAT Accountant, you will provide specialist VAT and taxation advice to support the Council’s financial management. You will work closely with service managers and senior leaders, ensuring compliance with VAT regulations, minimising liabilities, and supporting the effective delivery of projects and services for Knowsley residents. This role combines technical expertise in VAT with strategic financial management support in a local government context.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify, advise on, and manage VAT implications of projects, major developments, and partnerships undertaken by the Council
  • Manage all aspects of VAT and non-payroll taxation, including tax planning, to minimise liabilities and financial risks
  • Monitor the Council’s VAT partial exemption position, completing all necessary year-end calculations
  • Provide timely and accurate advice on VAT and other taxation queries from service managers and stakeholders
  • Interpret VAT implications of policies, service plans, and strategies, ensuring compliance and best practice
