Reports to: Quality Controller
Are you a qualified Vehicle Inspector with hands-on experience in municipal and commercial fleet maintenance? Do you take pride in delivering high-quality, safety-focused work? If so, we want you on our team!
We’re looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Vehicle Inspector to support the smooth operation of our Council’s MOT Testing Station and broader vehicle inspection services. This role is essential in ensuring vehicles and equipment meet legal and safety standards while delivering excellent service to the public and internal departments.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED – QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Motor Vehicle or equivalent
  • VOSA accreditation as a Commercial Vehicle Inspector and Nominated Tester (Class 4 to 7 MOTs)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in maintaining municipal, commercial, or plant fleets
  • Intermediate welding or motor vehicle electrical skills to NVQ Level 2 standard
  • Experience working with the public in an MOT environment
  • Familiarity with ICME, manufacturer data, and technical service instructions
  • A good level of general education to interpret technical information and accurately record work.
  • Forklift driving licence and LGV Category C (HGV 2) licence.
  • Experience with job card systems, budget awareness, and reporting performance.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety regulations, risk assessments, and safe workshop practices.
  • Flexible and capable of working independently or as part of a team, with good communication skills.
Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Carrying out MOT tests (Class 4–7) as a VOSA Nominated Tester
  • Inspecting and testing vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment, and plant to Council and legal standards
  • Supporting with repairs and diagnostics, using the right tools and manufacturer guidance
  • Ensuring compliance with MOT testing regulations and quality standards
  • Liaising with the public at the MOT Testing Station—booking appointments, reporting defects, and managing complaints professionally
  • Processing payments (cash, card, cheque) and ensuring they’re recorded securely and accurately
  • Keeping the workshop safe, clean, and organised
  • Assisting with planning and scheduling of vehicle testing and maintenance programmes
  • Preparing job cards, cost estimates, defect reports, and using our Fleet Management System
  • Occasionally deputising for the Quality Controller when required
  • Performing off-site inspections, roadside support, and recovery tasks when necessary
  • Operating within strict Health & Safety and Council policies
