JOB DESCRIPTION:

To ensure the efficient and smooth operation of the Council’s MOT testing station. Promote a culture of continuous improvement to present and future service needs and to improving the transport and MOT test station for users of this service.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure coverage of the MoT Test Station; perform MoT tests on Council and public vehicles up to and including Class 7 when required.
  • Assist the Workshop Manager in planning and scheduling annual MoT tests, inspections, maintenance, and repair programmes.
  • Inspect and test vehicles and equipment to Council standards and legal requirements; diagnose faults and provide condition and maintenance reports.
  • Identify and report potential faults or compliance issues affecting roadworthiness.
  • Verify daily completion and accuracy of job cards and related documentation, ensuring proper authorisation of all work and costs.
  • Support servicing and repairs of vehicles and equipment safely and correctly, following legal, manufacturer, and internal standards.
  • Safeguard the Council against prosecution by adhering to VOSA MoT Testing regulations and completing all necessary documentation.
  • Liaise with the public regarding MoT tests, manage bookings, report defects, and handle complaints as per Council procedures.
  • Securely manage MoT safe keys, legal test documents, and report any missing materials immediately.
  • Process MoT payments (cash, cheque, card), verify accuracy, and store transaction records securely in line with Council procedures.
  • Work independently, whether supervised or unsupervised.
  • Act as deputy in the absence of the Quality Controller when required.
  • Monitor and report MoT Testing Station performance against targets on a daily or weekly basis to the Workshop Manager.
  • Complete risk assessments for lone working and high-risk tasks; conduct off-site inspections, roadside assistance, and vehicle recovery.
  • Follow and apply technical service instructions and manufacturer guidance during tasks.
  • Verify and report cost estimates for repairs before starting work, including any job sheet variations.
  • Create and update job cards via the Fleet Management System or manually; ensure all tasks are signed off and documented by shift end.
  • Identify, request, and verify replacement parts, minimising downtime and ensuring compatibility with original specifications.
  • Perform component manufacturing and fabrication; undertake welding tasks where trained and appropriate.
  • Review work methods for efficiency, viability, and compliance with Health & Safety regulations; wear protective gear as required.
  • Supervise and instruct junior staff or third parties assisting in MoT inspections or transport-related tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness, tidiness, and safety in the Transport Workshop at all times.
  • Support team and personal development through training and continuous improvement to enhance service delivery and meet performance standards.
  • Recommend vehicle improvements or modifications for safer, more economical operation.
  • Maintain safe working practices in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Council policy.
  • Work a standard shift system as required to meet the Council’s operational needs.
