Job Summary:
Hemlock Animal Hospital is seeking a compassionate and motivated Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist to join our team. In this dual role, you’ll help care for pets while supporting daily operations at our clinic. From assisting during exams to helping clients at the front desk, you’ll play a key part in ensuring quality care and a positive experience for both animals and their owners.
This position involves working closely with our veterinary team, providing hands-on support with animals and helping maintain a clean, organized environment. You should be comfortable around a variety of animals, be quick to adapt, and able to handle both medical and administrative responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in feeding, grooming, and weighing animals
  • Clean and disinfect cages, exam rooms, and equipment
  • Restrain animals during exams, treatments, or diagnostic procedures
  • Support veterinarians with medical procedures, x-rays, and euthanasia
  • Monitor animal behavior and report concerns to the veterinarian
  • Administer medications as directed
  • Provide comfort and reassurance to animals and their owners
  • Help manage emergencies as needed
  • Welcome clients, check in appointments, and manage the waiting area
  • Answer phones and provide basic information to clients
  • Maintain accurate logs and records (e.g., drug logs, x-rays)
  • Educate clients on pet care basics, including nutrition and preventive health

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong communication skills and a caring, patient demeanor
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable handling cats, dogs, and small animals
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Available to work occasional emergency shifts if needed
  • High school diploma required; completion of a Veterinary Assistant program is an asset
  • Experience in a veterinary clinic or animal care setting is a plus
  • Prior customer service or receptionist experience is helpful
  • Pet ownership or familiarity with pet care is considered an advantage
