Description
Description This position is responsible for providing technical and medical assistance in the care and treatment of all zoo specimens both in the collection and in quarantine, under the supervision of the Director of Animal Health. Assists the veterinarian in medical/surgical procedures. Administers anesthesia. Provides technical and supportive care of in-house patients and quarantine animals, and closely follows-up and monitors ongoing outpatient cases. Administers medications and therapies as instructed. Provides routine clinical pathology analysis including hematology, serum chemistries, and cytology. Participates in training for medical behaviors in collection animals. Maintains hospital in a clean, orderly and professional manner. Cleans and maintains hospital equipment. Maintains inventory of medical and lab supplies. Organizes and packages biological sample shipments. Maintains accurate files and medical records. Maintains familiarity with and assists in the implementation of safety requirements such as those regulated by OSHA. Contributes to a positive work environment. Requirements Candidate must be a certified or licensed veterinary technician, preference will be given to applicants with experience in a zoo or aquarium setting. Must be able to work in weather conditions typical to the Midwest Ohio region. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. Must be able to work at least one weekend day and some holidays This is a temporary full-time, hourly non-exempt position. The Akron Zoo is a Drug-Free Workplace and an EOE.
