GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Under general direction performs laboratory animal care and the maintenance of appropriate research conditions, performs specialized technical services for investigators.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SELECTION

Education: Is a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Two years of related experience with a minimum of one year as a Veterinary Technologist 1.
Other: Physically capable of performing the required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs. No history of animal-related allergies. Must be willing to participate in the University Health and Safety program, which includes the requirement to undergo an immunization program depending on the work environment. Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to take direction and work independently. May be required to be in possession of a valid Provincial Class “G” driver’s license. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.

The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

  • performs special husbandry needs required for animal experiments and disease control such as managing valuable colonies of transgenic mice, gene knockout and immunodeficient mice; responsible for establishing rodent breeding colonies, maintaining records, providing technical support involving identification, sampling for DNA analysis, anaesthesia, injections and blood sampling;
  • recognizes and implements appropriate housing for specialized colonies;
  • maintains specialized containment equipment such as biological safety cabinets and ventilated racks;
  • instructs in species specific teaching modules;
  • implements strategies for problem breeding colonies;
  • trains research personnel in technical and husbandry related areas to ensure the highest standards of animal care are met;
  • wears personal protective equipment as appropriate;
  • may perform the duties of a Veterinary Technologist I and;
  • other related duties as required
