Overview Join us for a 6-12 week internship, with a commitment of minimum of 32 hours per week, where you'll gain valuable experience in zoo medicine. Open to students currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary technology program and licensed veterinary technicians, this rotation offers exposure to clinical medicine, surgery, husbandry, quarantine protocols, laboratory techniques, and pathology. You'll assist veterinary staff with medical and surgical procedures, patient care, and more. Ideal candidates are second-year students or recent graduates with experience in veterinary practice and a passion for exotic animal care. Application Deadline is July 1, 2026 Responsibilities The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium offers 6-12 week 32hrs/wk rotations open to students currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary technology program and veterinary technicians with a current license looking to get into the zoo medicine field. Students gain first hand clinical experience with medicine, surgery, husbandry, quarantine protocols, laboratory techniques, and pathology. Students will assist veterinary staff in medical and surgical procedures and set up, patient anesthetic monitoring, preparation and processing of laboratory samples, hospitalized patient care, quarantine patient management, supply and equipment maintenance, and maintaining patient records. Qualifications Second Year College Student or recent graduate (2 years or less) Veterinary technology student currently enrolled in an accredited program or currently licensed/registered and practicing veterinary technician. Experience working or interning in a veterinary practice directly with animals. Knowledge of exotic animals and their medicine strongly encouraged. Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing. Ability to work Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required. Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check Ability to provide their own housing and transportation Hours: Minimum of 32 hours/week for 6 to 12 weeks.
