JOB SUMMARY

Vice President, Underwriting will lead our mortgage underwriting initiative, driving both strategic direction and day-to-day execution. In the early stages, this leader will be hands-on, directly reviewing and underwriting mortgage files to establish strong processes, ensure credit quality, and set the foundation for operational excellence.
As the business scales, the VP will be responsible for building and managing a high-performing underwriting team, developing policies, procedures, and technology-driven efficiencies that maintain speed without compromising compliance or risk standards. This role requires a blend of deep mortgage underwriting expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
The ideal candidate is a proven leader who can roll up their sleeves in the beginning, while also bringing the vision and operational discipline to scale a best-in-class underwriting function that supports our company’s growth goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of progressive mortgage underwriting experience, including recent leadership or management responsibility.
  • Certifications: DE (Direct Endorsement) certification required; LAPP/SAR preferred. Additional underwriting certifications across Conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA programs strongly desired.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of agency guidelines, investor requirements, credit risk analysis, and regulatory compliance.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to build, scale, and mentor high-performing underwriting teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Analytical Ability: Strong decision-making skills with the ability to balance risk, compliance, and business objectives.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate across departments and influence at all levels.
  • Technology: Proficiency with LOS/POS systems, AUS platforms (DU/LP), and a strong comfort level with adopting new technology solutions.
  • Mindset: Hands-on leader who thrives in a high-growth, entrepreneurial setting and can shift between detailed underwriting and big-picture strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide oversight of cash flow analysis and credit analysis to maintain financial health.
  • Collaborate with teams on financial modeling, technical accounting, and mortgage servicing strategies.
  • Prepare comprehensive financial reports for stakeholders, showcasing the organization’s performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hands-On Underwriting (Initial Phase): Personally review and decision mortgage files to establish credit standards, maintain quality, and model underwriting best practices.
  • Build & Scale the Underwriting Team: Recruit, train, and mentor underwriters and support staff to meet growing volume demands while maintaining service levels.
  • Policy & Risk Management: Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures in alignment with investor, agency, and regulatory requirements.
  • Operational Excellence: Establish metrics, workflows, and technology integrations that improve speed, accuracy, and efficiency of underwriting decisions.
  • Collaboration: Partner with Operations, Sales, Processing, and Secondary Marketing to ensure seamless loan flow and timely closings.
  • Quality Assurance: Monitor underwriting performance and implement QA/QC practices to mitigate risk and uphold compliance.
  • Leadership & Vision: Provide strategic guidance on underwriting capacity, pipeline management, and resource planning as the company scales.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay informed of market, regulatory, and agency changes, ensuring company underwriting practices remain competitive and compliant.
