Victim Services Haldimand Norfolk New Credit provides immediate crisis response, intervention, and prevention services that are responsive to the needs of individuals, families and communities affected by crime and sudden tragedies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: To support the needs of victims of crime and tragic circumstances by providing a full range of trauma-informed, victim-centered supportive services, including needs assessment, crisis intervention, case coordination, information sharing, emotional support and referrals to other community services agencies. This is a highly responsible position with a mandate for the regional delivery and coordination of a comprehensive range of services and supports to meet the needs of crime victims (adults, children, and families). Victim Services Specialists are expected to operate with a significant degree of professional autonomy while delivering services, coordinating information and using intervention strategies with criminal justice personnel and other professionals as required. The incumbent will conduct needs assessments and work with appropriate resources to determine and coordinate case plans and assume a leadership role in the development and delivery of public and professional education sessions and workshops related to victimology.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide crisis intervention, psycho-educational information, emotional support and practical assistance to clients. Advocate on behalf of clients and liaise with other professionals as required.

  • Manage/coordinate assigned high volume of cases.
  • Network with community agencies and the justice system.
  • Field inquiries, in all forms, from the public and other stakeholders.
  • Compile relevant information for statistical reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS Bachelor degree in Social Work, Sociology, Victimology or Psychology (equivalences will be considered)

  • Victim-related work experience a must
  • Experience in conducting needs assessments (asset) Knowledge of various types of victimization
  • Demonstrated experience developing safety plans
  • Knowledge of services provided by community and governmental agencies (asset) Ability to provide culturally competent and trauma-informed support services
  • Case management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Acknowledgment of requirement of use of a personal vehicle

WORKING CONDITIONS Flexible hours; evening, weekend shift rotation related to crisis support. On-call support as required.

  • The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license, insurance, and a reliable vehicle is required to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • Mentally and physically able to perform all tasks assigned, including lifting and carrying equipment.
  • Successful completion of a detailed criminal background check.

the trauma-informed philosophical framework set by Victim Services of Haldimand Norfolk New Credit.

  • This position exposes the incumbent to possible vicarious trauma that results from empathetic engagement with recently traumatized clients
