ABOUT THE MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAM: Established in 1974, the music therapy program has long served as a leader in the field and is proud to advance its role as Virginia’s premiere and progressive center of music therapy education and training. Offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates, our programs are recognized as innovative and forward-oriented and are continually updated to meet and promote advances in the field. Undergraduates begin music therapy coursework in their first semester and have opportunities for hands-on clinical experiences throughout the program. Musicianship is core to each degree program, with students completing comprehensive coursework in guitar, keyboard, voice, percussion and music technology. Interdisciplinary experiences are infused into student learning, with students participating in Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP) experiences throughout their studies. Aligned with advances in the field, Shenandoah University offers the first Masters degree in Music Therapy and Professional Counseling in Virginia, which provides a pathway to a dual Board Certification (MT-BC) and Professional Counselor (LPC) credentialing.
