The Niagara West Adult Learning Centre (NWALC) has been helping residents of Lincoln, West Lincoln and Grimsby to improve their reading, writing, numeracy and digital skills for over 25 years.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • CHRP or CHRL designation (or working toward designation).
  • Demonstrated experience in HR functions, particularly policy development and implementation.
  • Understanding of employment law, compliance, and governance best practices.
  • Prior board or governance experience is an asset, but not required.
  • Resident of the Niagara Region or surrounding area.
Responsibilities

THE ROLE

We are seeking a Volunteer Director (HR & Policy Specialization) to join our Board of Directors. This position is ideal for someone with a strong human resources background, preferably with a CHRP or CHRL designation, who is passionate about equity, accessibility, and community development.
The successful candidate will play a key role in leading the review and development of organizational policies and procedures and chair or co-chair our Policy Committee. In addition to policy leadership, you will participate fully as a board member in governance, oversight, and strategic planning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

All board members are expected to:

  • Know the organization’s mission, programs, policies, and needs.
  • Follow bylaws, policies, and board resolutions.
  • Maintain confidentiality about internal matters.
  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in board meetings.
  • Serve as an advocate and ambassador for NWALC in the community.
  • Participate in one or more committees and contribute to policy and strategic planning.

HR & POLICY-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the review, reworking, and development of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Chair or co-chair the Policy Committee, coordinating updates and recommendations.
  • Provide HR expertise on governance matters and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including employment standards and accessibility requirements.
  • Advise the board on HR-related trends, risks, and opportunities that may affect the organization.
