This position is required to work in person out of Burlington Fire Station 5 (2241 Kilbride Street).
Position Overview:
Burlington Fire operates eight fire stations across the city. Of these, Fire Station 5 in Kilbride (2241 Kilbride Street) is the only volunteer fire station. We are currently seeking dedicated community members to join our team of Volunteer Firefighters at Fire Station 5.
Volunteer Firefighters serve as first responders, providing essential fire and emergency response services to the community. This role requires a strong commitment to training, teamwork, and availability.
If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter with Burlington Fire, you must ensure you meet the eligibility requirements and can maintain active status with respect to residency and availability.
Responsibilities:

Volunteer Firefighters at Station 5 serve the Kilbride community and the City of Burlington by responding to a broad range of emergency situations. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Responding to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies as a first responder.
  • Providing emergency pre-hospital medical aid.
  • Assisting with hazardous materials incidents and other specialized responses.
  • Supporting community safety through preparedness, prevention, and emergency response activities.

Serving as a Volunteer Firefighter requires a significant commitment of time for both training and emergency response. The safety of the community, your fellow firefighters, and yourself depends on the skills you develop, maintain, and continually improve.
Volunteers must have a life/work balance that allows the flexibility to respond to emergency incidents and to meet the attendance and training requirements of the position.
Requirements:

Station 5 Volunteer Firefighters must meet and maintain the following requirements:

  • Residency: Maintain a permanent residence within an 8-minute travel time to Fire Station 5.
  • Emergency Response Attendance: Achieve and maintain a minimum of 30% of total emergency responses dispatched to Station 5 within a calendar year.
  • Training Attendance: Attend and participate in a minimum of 70% of weekly training sessions (typically held Wednesday evenings), and complete 100% of all mandatory training within a calendar year.

In order to qualify for selection as a Volunteer Firefighter with Burlington Fire, the following requirements must be met:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 60.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond to emergency calls with flexible availability (daytime, evenings, overnight, weekends).
  • Successfully pass a health, medical evaluation and a fitness assessment.
  • Meet the following vision standards:

o 20/30 uncorrected or 20/40 corrected
o Satisfactory completion of a colour vision test
A valid (G-Class) driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).

Preferred Qualifications (assets, but not mandatory):

  • Previous firefighting experience.
  • Formal first aid training.

A valid Class DZ driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract with no more than three (3) driving related convictions and an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire.
Police Check Requirement:
This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense, (proof required only once the volunteer opportunity is confirmed).
