Description

How you’ll make a difference:
We have a number of community groups and volunteers who help look after our green spaces in South Gloucestershire. As a Volunteer Groups Support Officer, you will be the main point of contact for these groups, empowering them to carry out landscape and environmental improvement projects, which contribute towards the enhancement and maintenance of our communities and spaces.
Assisting with the delivery of a wide range of community, landscape and environmental projects, you will help to achieve the council’s policies in relation to open space management and support the efficient and sustainable management of open spaces.

What you will be doing:

  • It will be your responsibility to provide advice and support to community groups, partners and customers, identifying areas where support is required to engage people in the provision and delivery of services.
  • You will support volunteer groups who manage and maintain our community open spaces, including organising volunteer agreements, co-ordinating training and skills opportunities, promotion and recruitment, networking and celebrating the work of our volunteers.
  • As part of the Place Improvements Team, you will be the first point of contact for our community groups and volunteers, providing support on policies and technical issues, ensuring that effective relationships are established and the advice provided is understood and accurate.
  • It will be key for you to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, by guiding groups on their responsibilities and establishing robust foundations for volunteer groups to be sustainable.
  • Regularly, you will contribute to the preparation and presentation of reports, reviewing data and developing solutions to given problems, ensuring that clear options and recommendations are put forward.

What we need from you:

  • It is essential you have experience of working in a relevant specialist environment and ideally be working towards a professional or technical qualification (e.g. horticulture or landscape) or already be part qualified.
  • You must have experience of working with and supporting community and voluntary groups to manage green spaces.
  • We require you to have relevant practical experience and be able to demonstrate an understanding in the principles of horticulture and landscape management.
  • Given the nature of the role, you will be able to engage effectively with colleagues and external partners and influence others based on your technical knowledge.
  • You will have some experience or training in the monitoring of resource budgets and control of costs.

What you need to know:

  • This is a full-time role, working 37 hours per week.
  • This is a limited term contract until 22nd April 2027.
  • The role is suitable for both office/home working.
  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have an alternative means of travel.
