Position Overview
The INN St Thomas-Elgin seeks to provide safe, emergency shelter to individuals 16 and over while supporting all basic human needs and reducing barriers to obtain housing.  
We are seeking kind, caring and passionate individuals to assist staff and guests with vital tasks to help ensure the safety and comfort of all who use our services. Reporting to the Kitchen & Food Services Coordinator, the role of the Volunteer varies in terms of times and duties. Potential duties could be but not limited to; donation sorting, handyman services, meal prepping, cooking, setting up serving station, serving, dishes, and clean up following meals.
This is a position with flexible hours and does not require a daily commitment; we can discuss times and frequency that works best for the shelter and you.

Conditions of Volunteer

  • Proof of being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 is mandatory.
  • Clean and completed Vulnerable Sector Police Check
  • 16 Years of age and older
  • Valid Food Handlers Certificate or another Health Unit approved certification is an asset

The shelter work environment can be physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting; all staff on shift need to be always capable to:

  • Maintain professionalism
  • Alternate sit/stand or walk
  • Climb up and down stairs
  • Reach overhead, at/below shoulder level and carry up to 40 pounds.

Key Responsibilities

Professional Conduct:

  • Model and actively promote a positive, welcoming, non-judgmental, inclusive environment to all individuals accessing The INN, where every individual is treated with courtesy, respect, and compassion. 
  • Maintain information in confidence as required except for instances where individuals are at risk of harm to themselves or others.
  • Adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct while upholding and enforcing all agency policies and procedures. Work collaboratively with staff, security, onsite partnering agencies and fellow volunteers to provide exemplary volunteer coordination.  
  • Treat the property of The INN with due care and caution, using resources sparingly and efficiently.
  • Work in accordance with and adhere to all provincial and federal legislations (i.e.: Ontario Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations etc

  • Discarding unusable items
  • Repackaging over stocked items to be stored or donated elsewhere
  • Kitchen: Flexible Times
  • Meal Prepping

  • Meals: Approximately 3 hours per meal for preparation and clean up;

Breakfast 6:30-7:30am, Lunch 12:00-1:00pm, Dinner 6:30-7:30pm
