JOB SUMMARY: The Clinic Laboratory Technician performs a wide variety of laboratory analyses by basic waived testing methodologies according to established standards and procedures in order to obtain valid data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Utilizes and maintains high technology, scientific equipment and recognizes and resolves testing problems and invalid or inconsistent test data. Collects laboratory specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture for subsequent testing and collects throat culture specimens. Exhibit the F.I.R.S.T. values (Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service, and Trust). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs waived clinical laboratory tests to provide accurate diagnostic and therapeutic data in a timely manner. 2. Performs comprehensive phlebotomy skills for subsequent test procedures. 3. Performs quality control studies to ensure the validity of laboratory data. 4. Adheres to appropriate safety and personal protection policies. 5. Maintains equipment and work area in a manner to ensure quality of test results and to provide a safe work environment. 6. Provides collection instructions for outpatients. 7. Performs comprehensive computer skills per established protocol to ensure appropriate and timely transmission of test results. 8. Collects and processes reference laboratory specimens to prepare for clinical laboratory studies both onsite and send outs for reference lab. 9. Performs drug collections or testing as directed. 10. Provides clinical orientation to new Associates and students. 11. Performs general clerical and office functions including entering demographic and ordering information into the computer system. 12. Processes specimens and assures proper distribution for testing. 13. Maintains accurate logs and records. Prepare monthly statistics for review. 14. Considers the age of the patient served, applies knowledge of growth and development and age-specific techniques through the life span (neonates/infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) in planning and implementing care. 15. Contributes to the effective operations of the Organization by demonstrating dependability in job performance. 18. Performs other related duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT: Potential exposure to laboratory chemicals that may be toxic, caustic, or flammable. Moderate physical exertion with moderate to marked stress levels. Moderate noise level due to centrifuges and other instrumentation. Light to moderate moving of supplies. Numerous phone calls and interruptions. This job involves exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues. Must be able to move or position 25 lbs. independently. A flexible work schedule is required. CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: Contact with patients, physicians, visitors, family members, and Associates. Also has contact with healthcare providers and with students in clinical rotations. EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Automated and non-automated laboratory instrumentation and tools. Qualifications One to three (1-3) years laboratory experience required with proven competency skills. Computer skills, medical terminology required.
