Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Sussex Estates and Facilities (SEF) is seeking a dedicated and reliable Porter to support the University of Sussex’s waste management and environmental sustainability objectives. This role is essential in maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant campus environment through the effective collection, segregation, and disposal of waste.
As a key member of the Environmental Services team, you will contribute to the University’s sustainability goals while ensuring high standards of hygiene and operational efficiency across campus facilities.

As part of your role, your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Collect and correctly segregate general, recyclable, and specialist waste streams from various campus locations in accordance with environmental protocols.
  • Ensure the secure and compliant transportation of waste to designated disposal areas, adhering to Health & Safety procedures and risk assessments.
  • Complete waste consignment documentation, report non-compliance or segregation issues, and support regulatory adherence.
  • Collaborate with SEF departments to promote sustainability initiatives, including waste minimisation and biodiversity support.
  • Maintain cleanliness of bin areas and compounds through regular jet-washing and ensure waste equipment is safe and operational.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Must have Right to Work in the UK.
  • An enhanced DBS will be completed for the successful candidate
  • Demonstrates reliability, initiative, and a commitment to maintaining high standards without constant supervision.
  • Able to clearly report issues and collaborate with colleagues across departments.
  • Works cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve shared goals.
  • Physically fit and able to safely handle waste bins and operate machinery.
  • Full UK Driving Licence: Required for operational duties across the campus.
