The Town of Penetanguishene is a picturesque bilingual community with a population of approximately 10,000, located on the southerly tip of beautiful Georgian Bay. The Town is looking for a Wastewater Operator to join our team. Under the general supervision of the Chief Wastewater Operator, this position will ensure continuous and efficient operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plants and sewage pumping stations and maintain the related buildings and equipment.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Works at treatment plants and sewage pump stations, inspects, monitors and conducts performance tests. Reads plant equipment gauges, dials, SCADA systems and other instrumentation.
- Operates and adjusts pumps, motors, valves, feeders and other equipment.
- Maintains, compiles and updates operation logs and reports; performs mathematical calculations related to plant activities.
- Mixes and adds process treatment chemicals and ensures adequate chemical application according to regulations and guidelines.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, modifies, troubleshoots and services plant operation machinery and equipment; works with SCADA system, conducts preventative maintenance tasks.
- Collects and documents liquid and solid samples and performs a variety of routine wastewater quality laboratory tests; monitors laboratory results.
- Performs general plant facility and grounds maintenance, as required.
- Participates in the development of goals and procedures for wastewater treatment activities; gathers and analyzes data.
- Works with a variety of vendors and outside contractors.
- Performs on-call duties and reports to appropriate plants/ pump stations to assess and adjust/repair problems in a timely manner, in order to maintain plant operations.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator licence and must work towards obtaining a Class 3 Wastewater Treatment licence. Operator in Training (OIT) licenced operators may apply.
- Post-secondary education in a related field of study is an asset.
- Water Distribution and Supply Licence would be an asset.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers Licence.
- Must have experience and knowledge of wastewater treatment chemicals used within the plant and their safe use and application and wastewater sampling methods and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, blueprints, schematics and diagrams.
- Requires computer skills and must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Able to work with maintenance programs and work orders. Excellent technical troubleshooting skills.
- Strong ability to work with numbers, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- Must have good organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
- Capable of operating multiple pieces of equipment and small tools.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and provincial and local laws pertaining to wastewater treatment.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Requires experience and knowledge of methods and techniques for maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting wastewater plant equipment and processes.
- Must have experience and knowledge of wastewater treatment chemicals used within the plant and their safe use and application and wastewater sampling methods and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, blueprints, schematics and diagrams.

Compensation: The current pay for this position starts at $32.72 per hour, based on a 35-hour workweek. This position is a full-time unionized position covered under CUPE, Local 2308.05
