Responsibilities

The Water Resources & Drought Team ensure we deliver environmentally sustainable water resources both now and for future generations. Throughout the graduate placement you will spend time across a number of teams to give you the skills and experience to help you prepare for a senior role within Water Resources Management.

Examples include:

  • Drought Management - we operate in the driest part of the UK, where around half of the water we supply comes from groundwater sources (e.g. boreholes) and the other half from surface water sources (e.g. reservoirs and rivers). You will have the opportunity to learn how we carefully monitor and manage our water resources position to ensure we keep taps flowing now and long into the future.
  • Sustainable Abstraction - our region is environmentally sensitive and we are committed to ensuring all our water resources abstractions are sustainable to support the environment. In this team, you will learn how we manage new and emerging environmental obligations, including the delivery of physical river restoration and habitat improvement schemes across our region, as well as how we maintain compliance with our existing environmental obligations.
  • Supply Demand Strategy - we’re working to ensure water is available for generations to come-balancing the needs of our customers and the environment. Here you will learn how we maintain balance between supply and demand against the backdrop of growth, climate change, drought and environmental pressures.
  • Groundwater Engineering - we draw water from over 450 boreholes and have an in-house service to manage and maintain these groundwater assets 24/7. You will have the opportunity to actively contribute to safety management, asset investment planning, failure mode analysis and water quality management of these critical resources.
