SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Water Resources Technician will work in the Water Resources Department of SVCA. This position is primarily responsible for assisting with field and office duties related to the operation of SVCA’s Flood Forecasting and Warning program. Working under supervision of the Flood Forecasting & Warning Coordinator, the position will comprise of field data collection, data management and analysis, and inspection and maintenance of hydrometric and meteorological monitoring equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess or working towards a post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, natural resources management or a related field
  • Knowledge and experience with hydrology and collection of hydrometric and meteorological data
  • Knowledge and experience with streamflow measurement techniques and equipment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, and organization skills
  • Ability to undertake field work under varying terrain and weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety hazards related to working around water and roadways
  • Valid ‘G’ Class Driver’s License
  • Valid First Aid Certificate is considered an asset
Responsibilities
  • Assist with the installation, inspection and maintenance of stream gauge stations and meteorological monitoring equipment
  • Cleaning and calibration of precipitation gauges
  • Obtaining streamflow measurements for the development of rating curves
  • Completion of elevation surveys using a rod and optical level
  • Quality assurance, control, and entry of hydrometric data
  • Development, review, and update of plans and standard operating procedures
  • Review and archive of historical flood records
  • Support other activities within the Water Resources Department, as required
  • Abide by all SVCA policies and procedures, including those related to health and safety and use all required PPE
