Description
Description Construct and rebuild a variety of difficult and complicated patterns such as multi-stage pumps, complicated pumps or machine parts, jigs and difficult models for development or experimental work. Close fit parts require working to blueprint or diagram dimensions, making necessary shrinkage allowances for the type of metal to be cast. Assemble parts and mount patterns. Build gates and accessory equipment. Responsible for securing satisfactory castings from the pattern and may suggest changes to improve its manufacture. Make core boxes, dryers, pattern layout and match plates. Make difficult repairs. Able to construct the complete range of pump patterns and occasionally check the work of other pattern makers. May also perform other miscellaneous work. Particular attention must be made to safety consciousness. Requirements COMPLEXITY AND JUDGMENT Work is generally diversified and require a thorough knowledge of pattern making principles and practices. Considerable judgment required in developing approaches and making adjustments, in some cases working without finished measurements and following only a general objective. EDUCATION Understand the working principles of pump operation, have a thorough knowledge of foundry methods and practices and be familiar with machine shop practices. Use shop mathematics, handbook formulas, and be familiar with ordinary and shrink rules and other measuring instruments. Work from complicated drawings, sketched and samples. Education completed should be equivalent to partial technical high school plus four (4) years wood pattern making apprenticeship or trade training. EXPERIENCE Six (6) months foundry & pattern shop experience preferred, but not required. INITIATIVE Initiative necessary to successfully perform functional responsibilities. Properly plan details of pattern or tool in process. Work independently towards objectives, receiving only general direction and guidance and make decisions within standards widely accepted in the trade. Unusual problems should be referred to supervisor. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Some heavy lifting, push/pulling on occasion, but largely moderate physical effort required, and repetitive motion. Some work must be performed in an awkward position with considerable vibration using power tools and generally light parts. Employees working in this position are required to frequently walk or hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. WORKING CONDITIONS Some conditions are extremely noisy with exposure to dust, flying wood chips, heat and some fumes. Some exposure to outside weather conditions. Working in the foundry environment subject to temperatures of heat and cold depending on the season. Required PPE includes, but is not limited to steel toe shoes, hearing protection, hard hat, eye protection, and necessary protective mask EOE
Responsibilities
