Description The Weld Technician supports welding operations within the automotive manufacturing plant by assisting in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of welding processes. This role works closely with production, quality, and maintenance teams to ensure weld integrity, compliance with industry standards, and efficient manufacturing practices. Key Responsibilities Welding Process Support Assist in developing and maintaining welding processes for robotic and manual welding applications (MIG, spot weld, arc weld, etc.). Monitor weld performance and support troubleshooting of welding defects, equipment malfunctions, or process deviations. Conduct weld testing and analysis to ensure compliance with engineering specifications, safety, and quality standards. Quality & Compliance Support weld inspections, audits, and process capability studies in line with customer and IATF 16949 requirements. Document weld parameters and ensure process adherence to AWS and automotive OEM standards. Assist in developing standardized work instructions and training operators on weld quality requirements. Continuous Improvement Participate in problem-solving activities (8D, root cause analysis) related to welding issues. Recommend and implement improvements in weld sequence, fixture design, or tooling to improve throughput and quality. Support lean manufacturing and cost reduction initiatives. Cross-Functional Collaboration Weld Technician Work with design engineering to review weld feasibility and manufacturability of new parts. Coordinate with maintenance to ensure weld equipment (robots, guns, tips, power supplies) are properly maintained. Partner with quality and production supervisors to address day-to-day weld related concerns. Requirements Qualifications Associate’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field with relevant experience may be considered. Mid to Sr. Level knowledge of welding processes (MIG, TIG, Spot, Arc) and metallurgy. Familiarity with automotive quality systems (IATF 16949, ISO, PPAP) preferred. Hands-on experience with weld inspection tools (destructive/nondestructive testing, gauges, etc.) a plus. Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills. Proficiency in MS Office; familiarity with CAD, SAP, or MES systems is beneficial. Work Environment Primarily plant floor environment with exposure to heat, noise, and industrial equipment. Must be able to wear appropriate PPE and follow all safety regulations.
