Description The Welder Assistant supports experienced welders by performing essential non-welding tasks and completing basic welds under supervision. This position provides hands-on training and exposure to welding and fabrication techniques across construction, manufacturing, and repair environments. Key responsibilities include reading blueprints, preparing materials and work areas, operating basic tools and equipment, and maintaining a safe, clean workspace. Requirements Responsibilities Prepare work areas by setting up scaffolds, ladders, and welding equipment. Transport materials and equipment to and from worksites. Clean and prepare metal surfaces using grinders, chippers, and other tools. Assist welders by positioning, holding, or clamping materials in place for tack welding. Shadow experienced welders to learn proper techniques and procedures. Inspect completed welds for defects and report issues to the lead welder. Cut materials using tools such as plasma cutters, torches, or saws. Assist with assembling and dismantling metal structures. Perform fire watch duties and strictly adhere to all safety protocols. Conduct post-welding cleanup by grinding, brushing, or removing slag and impurities. Maintain welding tools, equipment, and gas tanks as needed. Complete simple welds under supervision to gain experience. Keep the workspace clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards. Perform other general labor tasks as directed by the lead welder or supervisor. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience: Previous work in construction, manufacturing, or an industrial setting preferred but not required. Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of welding concepts; familiarity with MIG, TIG, and stick welding is a plus. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods, perform manual labor, and lift up to 50–100 pounds. Communication: Strong listening skills with the ability to follow directions and work effectively within a team. Safety Awareness: Demonstrated commitment to safety and knowledge of standard PPE and safety procedures. Skills Technical skills: Proficiency with basic hand and power tools. Ability to read and interpret simple blueprints or schematics. Understanding of metals and materials used in welding. Soft Skills Teamwork: Works collaboratively with others to achieve project goals. Dependability: Reliable, punctual, and consistent in work quality. Adaptability: Comfortable working in various environments and weather conditions. Attention to Detail: Maintains precision and quality in material handling and cleanup. Working conditions This position is physically demanding and involves working in various settings, including workshops and outdoor construction sites. Work may expose the employee to extreme weather conditions, noise, hazardous chemicals, and fumes. Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
