Fabricator / Welder
State Garden is looking for one Fabricator / Welder to join our Maintenance department! Located in Chelsea, MA, State Garden has been in the produce business for over 75 years and we are proud of the high quality products we sell. What started out as a family-run celery business has transformed into the company we are today – a top supplier of organic and conventional tender leaf greens, spinach and celery hearts.
The Fabricator / Welder will perform various fabrication utilizing welding, cutting, and brazing techniques to aid the Maintenance department in support of operations. This position utilizes various hand tools to aid in fabrication. Further, it supports maintenance operations through efforts on machine set up, troubleshooting, repairs and preventive maintenance.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Thorough understanding of machines and tools used in welding including designs, uses, maintenance, and repair.
  • Basic understanding of design techniques, principles, and tools necessary for the precise production of technical plans, drawings, models, and shop drawings.
  • Excellent ability to read and listen (English) to assignments given in a variety of forms.
  • Basic understanding of mathematics as related to welding assignments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of human and food safety.
  • Knowledge of welding symbols.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Works independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Able to respond to critical failures during “off hours”; May be called in off schedule for immediate repairs.
  • Bilingual preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship or successful completion of an in-company, three-year training program required.
  • Preferred ASME welding certification or other comparable welding certification/training.
  • Basic computer skills (e-mail, MS office); Ability to learn specific computer application as necessary.
  • Prior food allergen training is a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Plans details of work order procedures; gathers required tools and materials based on instructions and specifications provided for job.
  • Follows hot work procedures; Pulls permit for various hot work jobs. Ensures safety equipment like a fire extinguisher is present for the job. Works with fire watch.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with TIG welding (thin gauge) stainless steel; proficient stick welding; proficient MIG welding.
  • Wears appropriate PPE matched to the task performed.
  • Repairs and fabricates various items and equipment using cutting, burning, welding, and grinding techniques. Is familiar with and proficient in the use of this and other shop equipment and tools.
  • Ability to safely cut work piece/s; Safely use powered equipment and hand tools.
  • Evaluates weld quality and conformance to desired specification/s.
  • Monitors the welding, burning, and fitting process to ensure parts are not overheated or damaged by warping, distortion, expansion, or shrinkage.
  • Prepares, assembles, and tacks weld parts and surfaces to be welded.
  • Maintains, organizes, and cleans equipment and the work area.
  • Notifies supervisor when faulty equipment or defective materials are discovered.
  • Ability to apply concepts of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
  • Ability to observes and follow OSHA regulations and all company policies.
  • Ability to make sound decisions, at times under pressure.
  • Maintains forward motion to meet or beat expectations when repairing various parts/failures: Manages time effectively.
  • Ability to read and understand shop drawings.
  • May work directly with outside contractors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
