Description:
JOB OVERVIEW
The Student Welfare Officer provides students with a wide range of support throughout their academic experience at Mont Rose College. This includes, but is not limited to, responding to queries regarding a students’ mental health, disability, medical, special arrangements for exams, or personal problems/challenges. This position reports to the Student Services Manager. The Student Welfare Officer will establish ongoing communication and positive relationships with students, faculty and external pastoral services to ensure students receive the best support and guidance.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in the relevant area, preferably health-related
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in the education sector
- Diploma in Counselling or equivalent professional qualification
- Understanding of national safeguarding policies and procedures
- Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
- High level of computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Attention to detail is a must, as well as strong organisational skills
- Experience working with a range of physical disabilities.
- Know how to recognise students with specific learning difficulties encountered in mainstream schools, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit and Asperger’s syndrome.
- Know how to identify learning difficulties in a range of situations and use a range of techniques.

Responsibilities:
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- To manage student referrals, liaising with the relevant academic team and internal and external services.
- To engage with the academic faculty on learning differences to establish a more comfortable learning experience.
- To work alongside the admissions/student services department to ensure we can meet the students’ needs within Mont Rose College if they have declared their personal challenges.
- To work alongside employability and other departments to enhance student outcomes.
- To provide pastoral support to students experiencing social or emotional issues Respond promptly and effectively to students in crisis situations, offering immediate pastoral care and support. Provide appropriate guidance and referrals to relevant services when required.
- To ensure students with individual learning plans receive the learning accommodations outlined in the plan and that these are addressed in the classroom.
- Proactively identify students with attendance concerns by working alongside the student service team and take the lead in implementing strategies to improve attendance, such as mentoring, academic counselling, or referring students to relevant support services.
- To be an effective academic advocate for students working alongside the academic team.
- To provide immediate assistance to students on a drop-in and appointment basis.
- To provide student information about welfare issues for distribution to staff and students.
- To provide training to staff and students concerning health and well-being.
- To maintain accurate student welfare records and information and ensure confidential records are held and shared per GDPR requirements.
- To provide activity reports to the Manager.
- To assist with organising health and well-being social activities and events for students.
ADDITIONAL KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Create and implement individualised support plans for students with diverse needs, including physical disabilities, mental health conditions, and specific learning differences. Ensure strategies are in place for regular monitoring and review.
- Build and maintain relationships with external agencies, healthcare providers, and support networks to provide comprehensive services for students facing personal challenges. This could include arranging referrals for counselling, therapy, or additional educational support.
- Champion mental health awareness across the institution. Encourage open discussions about mental health and provide guidance on coping strategies, resilience, and stress management.
- Create and distribute written or digital resources for students to better understand how to manage their personal challenges and ensure that all information is accessible to a wide range of learning needs.
- Lead and organize workshops or seminars on topics related to personal development, mental health, study skills, or transitioning to college life to help students navigate their academic and personal journeys.
- Support the development and updating of college policies and strategies related to student welfare, health, and well-being, ensuring they reflect current best practices and national standards.
- Actively ensure that all safeguarding policies are adhered to and that students are aware of the reporting process. Stay updated on national and local safeguarding developments.
