OVERVIEW
Job Summary:
The Wood and Composite Operator is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and finishing prototype components using wood, composite materials (e.g., carbon fiber, fiberglass), and hybrid structures. This role supports rapid prototyping and development of innovative products, requiring precision craftsmanship, familiarity with advanced materials, and collaboration with engineering and design teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Fabrication & Assembly:
- Lay up, bond, cure, and trim composite materials using manual and automated methods.
- Cut, shape, and assemble wood and composite components based on engineering drawings and specifications.
- Operate CNC machines, ply cutters, vacuum bagging systems, and autoclaves for composite processing.
- Prepare molds and apply release agents for composite layups.
Inspection & Quality Control:
- Perform in-process inspections to ensure dimensional accuracy and material integrity.
- Use measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, gauges) to verify tolerances.
- Document fabrication parameters and maintain traceability records.
Finishing & Repair:
- Sand, drill, polish, and finish wood and composite parts.
- Conduct repairs on damaged components using patching, bonding, and rework techniques.
- Install fasteners and perform surface preparation for bonding operations.
Collaboration & Feedback:
- Work closely with engineers to improve manufacturability and prototype performance.
- Provide feedback on tooling, materials, and process improvements.
Qualifications:
- Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2–5 years of experience in woodwork, composite fabrication, or prototype manufacturing.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions.
- Preferred:
- Certification in composite technology or woodworking.
- Experience in Rail, aerospace, automotive prototyping environments.
- Familiarity with cleanroom protocols and safety standards.
Skills & Competencies:
- Manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of composite materials (e.g., prepreg, epoxy resins).
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg and stand for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in workshop and lab environments.
