Description
The Dean’s Office in the School of Architecure, Planning & Landscape is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Workshop Technician.
Reporting to the Manager, Operations, Administration & Facilities and the Workshop Supervisor School, the candidate is primarily responsible to ensure that all Workshop/ maker space users are provided with safe, managed access to SAPL Workshop/ maker space facilities in their endeavors to fabricate models and prototypes. In this capacity, the incumbent will work closely with students, faculty members and support staff from all Program areas in the School.
The normal hours of operations are Monday to Friday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, these shifts are subject to change. (including the need for occasional weekend hours during peak periods) This position will be required to work and frequently travel between both the Main Campus and CBDL downtown locations, located on the C-train line. The School is moving to a new permanent location (801-7th Avenue SW) January 2026

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Perform skilled work of considerable complexity in the operation and maintenance of equipment and in the performance of technical procedures and analysis.
  • This work will also include developmental tasks which require judgment and creativity in solving technical or operational problems, choosing courses of action from several alternatives and modifying or developing new methods and techniques.
  • Work with precision equipment requiring skills in technical specialization or journeyman level in a range of trades such as fabrication, woodworking or electronics which includes working with metals, plastics, wood, glass and uncommon materials such as modelling clays and waxes, fabrics and films or metal alloys.
  • Use advanced technical knowledge to advise and assist graduate/ undergraduate students in practical application of procedures and techniques relating to technical requirements in projects encountered in studios. The candidate is required to participate in the development and delivery of the School`s Workshop/ maker space Safety Course.
  • The candidate may participate in receiving, and storage of supplies and equipment.
  • Liaise with the workshop supervisor and/or School in matters requiring shop assistance and expertise.
  • The candidate will ensure a personal initiative to implement and continue to improve all policies and procedures related to the Workshop/ maker space including daily cleaning of all workshop spaces where required
  • Ensure the proper operating procedures and safe usage of equipment and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • The completion of technical school training and approximately four years experience/special skills; or the completion of relevant trade qualifications and two years related work experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • In addition, candidates will be considered on the breadth of education, training, skills, and experience in these many specialized areas.
  • The candidate will maintain broad competencies in equipment operation and maintenance as related to detailed metal, wood, paper and plastic fabrication technologies.
  • Experience in model-making and prototype development and the ability to conceive, plan, and execute specialized fixtures and equipment as required for research and/or studio projects would also be considered assets.
  • Computer skills which include word processing and experience in 3D modelling, 3D slicing software will be an asset.
  • In addition, the candidate will demonstrate highly developed interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and can work effectively and harmoniously with a variety of faculty, students, staff and representatives from outside agencies as well as the public.
